Say What? Karaoke!

by STAFF WRITER

Well, it's that time of year again folks. Winter? Third quarter? The Super Bowl? Nope. Then what you ask? Karaoke. Say What? Exactly.

What has become a tradition at Central "leaps" back into action on February 29th. Karaoke, or the singing along to recorded music using a microphone, first became popular in Japan in the early 1970s and has since spanned the globe.

"Say What" as it is termed is a karaoke show and, competition, produced by Central's National Honor Society. Groups of contestants select and hopefully rehearse any song they want (granted it's school appropriate) for the first round and in the later rounds the songs are selected by a karaoke wheel of pre-chosen songs. In other words, it's just a larger scale "spin-off" of traditional karaoke.

The turnout every year has been tremendous and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Flemington Food Pantry as well as other local charities. A fun time is guaranteed by all involved, be it volunteers, spectators, or contestants.

Senior Samara Cifelli, the Project Coordinator this year, sums up the essence of Say What when she said, "People should definitely go see Say What because it's an event where you get to laugh along with your peers, and it's an opportunity for people to be total goofballs.

"The prepared act keeps the show professional and formal while the traditional karaoke rounds keep it alive and spontaneous, adding a great amount of humor overall."

A celebrity (faculty) panel will judge the first two rounds based upon these following criteria: style, accuracy, and overall performance with the audience deciding the third and final showdown between the two groups with the best scores.

The show is on Friday, February 29 at 7 p.m. in the Little Theater and is sure to be entertaining as always. Samara goes on to say, "What's great about Say What is that, although each group has a prepared act, in the later rounds they also have to participate and compete in the traditional karaoke format."

Any prospective groups can obtain a form to audition at any of the house offices. The audition will be a performance of the final prepared act. Auditions will be held February 13th and 14th in the Little Theater from 3 to 6. The competition is open to all grade levels, and everyone is encouraged to sign up.

Tickets to the show will be sold in lunches as the date approaches. Daily, morning, and lunch announcements as well as posters and fliers will be all around the school in the coming weeks.
